Can someone please give me a good reason for smoking?

Friday, February 26, 2010

Other than the obvious health implications involved which, for the most part, many people appear happy to ignore, giving up cigarettes could have actually saved those who quit a substantial amount of money. This is not taking into account the exorbitant price of the cigarettes themselves. Most commentators are reaching the stage of acceptance that there is a proportion of people that do not pay heed to the fact that they are likely to die earlier than non-smokers. However, the argument that money can be saved is more likely to make people sit up and take note.

Take this into consideration for a moment:

For those that opted to quit at the time that the smoking ban came into place, by now they would have saved an estimated £3,000 on average. Think about that; about £3,000 thousand pounds over a period of about 2 and a half years. When you couple this with the savings that are possible when it comes to life and critical illness insurance, it is possible to save a lot more. Let’s say for instance that you are looking to insure yourself for £10,000 for a period of 30 years. On average, your policy, if you are a non smoker, will be about £25 per month.

Now on the flip side, let’s say that you are a smoker.

In these cases, to ensure yourself for the same amount, it will cost you a whopping £45 pounds per month. Throughout the span of this policy, it equates to almost £9,000 pounds. This doesn’t even take into consideration the amount that you will continue to save on the price of cigarettes over the next 30 years. It is surprising that so many Britons are happy to see their money literally go up in smoke and it’s a situation that is likely to start changing.
